What a pump-out covers

Pumping and cleaning are the same visit. Here is what happens.

  • We find the tank and open the lids. Buried lids may need some digging first.
  • We pump the tank and clean it out.
  • We check the sludge and scum levels, the baffles, and the lids.
  • We haul the waste to a proper disposal site.

If you know where the lids are, put it in the short note. It makes the visit go faster.

How often to pump

Most homes need a pump-out on a three to five year cycle. A small tank or a full house fills up faster. A large tank with one or two people can go longer. If you can't remember the last pump-out, it is a good time to book one.

Signs your tank needs attention

  • Sinks, tubs, or toilets draining slow
  • Gurgling in the pipes
  • Sewage smell inside or out in the yard
  • Water or sewage backing up into the house
  • Wet spots or extra green grass over the drain field

One sign on its own may be minor. Two or more usually means the tank is full or something is not draining right.

Rain and your septic system

Heavy rain soaks the ground around the tank and the drain field. When the soil is full of water, the field can't take much more, and drains back up. Two things help. Get the tank pumped before the wet months, and point downspouts away from the tank and the field.
